English and Dual Credit English

Welcome to Bingham Academy's ELA and Dual Credit English courses!  Being able to communicate clearly is an important part of every job. The following descriptions outline the big picture of our English offerings.

English Language Arts 9th Grade: Grammar and punctuation!  We begin the year reviewing grammar and punctuation. As we continue through the year we will delve into American poetry and finally several Shakespeare's plays including Romeo and Juliet, The Twelfth Night, and Julius Caesar

English Language Arts 10th Grade:  Grammar and punctuation!  Rules and conventions!  All of this is tied together with interesting readings which include: 12 Angry MenTo Kill a Mockingbird, "The Most Dangerous Game," (along with many other short stories) "The Odyssey," and Midsummer Night's Dream.  We also build the foundations for Socratic Seminars that will be used in the higher grades.

English Language Arts 11th Grade:  The focus is on argumentative writing using Claim-Data-Warrant methods.  We also take a look at applying for jobs and colleges along with seeking out scholarships.  We read many different types of essays to help us in creating our own.  For Shakespeare this year, we're trying out Othello.  Students also choose to read either Ready Player One or The Princess Bride.

English Language Arts 12th Grade: The focus is on college writing using argumentation and rhetorical tools.  We watch out for logical fallacies and make sure that our sources are valid and unbiased.  We read HamletThe Road by Cormac McCarthy, and this year we read Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings.  We finish our senior projects and start preparing to enter college or the job market.

English 101:  This is a college-level essay writing course.  We spend time reading and responding to different essay styles and then we write our own.  Narrative, Argumentative, Compare and Contrast, Extended Definition, and Informative.  For our Compare and Contrast essay, we watch The Invasion of the Body Snatchers from 1957 and The Invasion which is an updated version from 2007. We also watch The Magnificent Seven from 1960 and the remake from 2016.  CEI college credits: 3.

English 102:  While we spend time reading different essays for practice, the focus in English 102 is the literature analysis.  Students will read short stories from Kurt Vonnegut, Raold Dahl, and Ray Bradbury after which they create a literature analysis of the story and/or the author's style.  The students then get to choose their own author for the fourth analysis.  We also watch three versions of Pride and Prejudice for an extended compare and contrast essay.  CEI credits earned: 3.

English 175:  English 175 is full of poetry at the beginning.  We then read Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.  The novels we read in the class are The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal, War Child by Emmanuel Jal, and Night by Elie Wiesel.  We end the class by watching a play production of Into the Woods.  There is a lot of time spent on annotating and evaluating these works.  CEI credits earned: 3.
